Events and Promotions
Over the past 28 years, Swiss Bear has organized many special events and promotions to attract people downtown. This includes the Coastal Christmas Celebration and Flotilla, Antique Shows, Summer Luncheon Series, The Annual Seafood Challenge, Civil War re-enactments, Antique Car Shows, Flag Day Celebrations, NC Wildlife Show, Independence Day Celebrations and Halloween parades. With the exception of MUMFEST, many have been spun off to other groups and nonprofits.
MUMFEST
Swiss Bear established MUMFEST in 1980 as one of many strategies to attract people to the downtown area. What began as a modest one day, two-block event is now widely recognized as one of the finest award-winning festivals in the state. It attracts more than 80,000 festival-goers to our historic downtown and waterfront. Swiss Bear produces MUMFEST in cooperation with the City of New Bern. This partnership made it possible to expand the festival throughout downtown and along the waterfront. Sponsorships, concession and vendor fees fund the festival. Festival proceeds are used to assist Swiss Bear with downtown revitalization projects.
In 2003, based on a survey of 400 festival-goers, an Economic Impact Report conducted by a consultant with the International Festival & Events Association concluded the direct overall economic impact of MUMFEST was $3,855,922.
